The Art of Condensation I - Intro

I think that condensation is very interesting. It appears. It disappears. It appears again. Somehow this never gets old. So the idea occurred to me to use condensation as an art medium.

You can draw in it with your finger, of course, and there's no end to photographs of dew covered flowers / bugs / leaves / spider webs / etc. But I wanted to harness the process itself to form an image. The condensation artwork should appear automatically with the condensation, and disappear again when it evaporates.

So I put myself to work on this. The video clip at right shows condensation forming an image on an early experimental work. With the technique used here the latent image is not quite invisible, but becomes much more prominent as the glass fogs up. The black display case simply maintains humidity and holds the glass at an incline to aid viewing. The base of the display case contains about a cup of warm water.

This method produces very delicate images that can only be seen from an angle. Nevertheless I created about a dozen pieces this way, a few of which can be seen in the Gallery.
